Hello and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Mark and I completed our 200K which began in Arlington and even got in a few bonus miles when we took a wrong turn. Over all we did 133.4 miles. We started at 7am sharp. It was still dark and there were blinking red lights everywhere and people dressed in reflective clothing with faces covered in balaclavas. It was a cool 37 degrees at the start and very dark. We had to sign a waiver, pick up our cue sheets (directions) and Brevet cards and off we went. We were dressed in layers but once we got moving it didn't feel very cold at all. There were about 30 people who did the ride. Mostly on upright bikes but also a few tamdems and recumbents( aka. Bents) as well. I wasn't as prepared as I thought. When we did our first century last year with 12,000 other riders we made great time. I dont' care too much about riding fast but it's amazing when riding with that many people how motivated you can become to keep up your speed. At the start of this ride, I had trouble getting my speed up. Randoneuring is all about being self supported and sufficient so when we rode for hours (13 in-the-saddle-hours to be exact) and didn't see anyone else around it becomes a whole other experience. This ride was alot more of a mental challenge than a physical one. When the host of the ride and his wife called us at 8:30pm to offer to pick us up it was tempting. BUT....we talked it over and in the spririt of randoneuring and being self sufficient we knew we'd make it home sooner or later and so we declined and trecked on. We saw the sunrise and the sunset and by the end my knees were killing me. Sitting down and standing were not possible without some help. But after alot of sleep and some more naps the next day Mark and I were ready again. We did a very small recovery ride today of about 6 miles this afternoon and are going for a 20+mile group ride tomorrow. Here are some pics. couldn't get any group shots with other riders. After the start they disappeared and we never saw them again.
